Internal Revenue Service has been continuously fighting against identity theft, and now they are sending identity verification letters to taxpayers to confirm their identity. However, not all taxpayers are eligible and may receive identity verification letters.

What is the IRS Verification Letter?

Suppose Internal Revenue Service or IRS suspects that the name on the e-file or paper-file is possibly the result of identity theft. In that case, the IRS will send a verification letter to the taxpayer, and it is referred to as 5071C letter. 

The verification letter is to notify the taxpayer in the United States that IRS has received a tax return file with the taxpayer’s name and Social Security Number. IRS believes it is not the original taxpayer.     

The taxpayer must access the IRS verification website Idverify.IRS.gov. com and complete the steps to successfully verify their identity and confirm whether they have filed the tax. There are series of questions that only original taxpayers can answerer. However, it is the efficient way to verify the identity of the taxpayer.

How to Comply with the Verification?

On the verification website, there are two different ways to verify the identity of taxpayers.

  • Offline – Calling at the toll-free number listed on the verification letter

Taxpayers with the 5071C letter must access the verification system and send the letter via US mail service.

What Happens After Verification?

As you complete answering all the questions successfully and verified that you are the original person behind the e-file or paper-file of tax return, the tax return gets processed successfully after that. After successful verification at Idverify.IRS.gov. com, it takes around 5-6 weeks to complete the tax return.     

The tax return will get rejected, and further investigation will start, if:

  • The verification fails to confirm the identity of the filer 
  • The verification process is incomplete
